Vertigo/Dizziness: Treatment with Acupuncture

Vertigo and dizziness appear in acupuncture literature and traditional Chinese medicine. Historical use does not by itself establish suitability or guarantee a permanent result.

Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness involving a spinning sensation, as though the room is moving around the patient or the patient is spinning around themselves. The patient may feel that they are leaning to one side or are about to fall.

Acupuncture has been investigated for some presentations of dizziness and vertigo, but their different causes cannot be treated as one condition. A proposed mechanism does not establish effectiveness. Diagnosis and assessment for conditions requiring immediate care come before discussion of any complementary intervention. Findings need to be interpreted for the population and outcome actually studied.

Vertigo and dizziness: what research examines

Acupuncture for Vertigo/Dizziness.
  • Which cause of dizziness and which patient group the publication concerns.
  • Whether it reports completed research, a pilot observation or a protocol for a future study.
  • Which symptom or functional outcome was measured and against which comparison.
  • How long follow-up lasted and which limitations affect interpretation of the findings.

There is no universal conclusion that one session ensures substantial or permanent improvement. Findings are considered in relation to study design, the cause of symptoms and follow-up duration. Individual progress requires reassessment and cannot be predicted from a general reference to the literature or a description of possible biological effects.

Vertigo, dizziness and acupuncture

Discussion of acupuncture should not be confused with identifying the cause of vertigo. Similar sensations can occur in different clinical contexts.

The Medical Acupuncture Methods page explains the method; Neurological disorders and symptoms gathers related articles.

Diagnosis starts with describing the episode

Diagnosing the cause of vertigo begins with a precise description of the experience. Spinning, unsteadiness and feeling close to fainting are different sensations. Explain which occurred without feeling that you need to know the medical term beforehand. Note when the first episode started, how long it lasted and whether there was a complete return to normal between attacks. Saying that dizziness happens frequently becomes more informative when it is linked to specific examples and their effect on ordinary activities.

Mention whether symptoms relate to head position, getting out of bed or another situation. Associated ringing in the ears, hearing changes, headache, nausea and recent medication changes can also be relevant. Do not repeatedly provoke symptoms to test yourself. Specialised balance tests and manoeuvres require an appropriately trained professional, who considers the history and any movement restrictions before deciding what is suitable. An online description can help prepare the account but cannot determine the correct examination or replace interpretation of its findings.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause

Treatment is not selected simply because vertigo appears in the symptom description. For confirmed benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, specific repositioning manoeuvres may be appropriate after assessment. Other conditions require a different approach. NICE guidance distinguishes positional vertigo from acute vestibular presentations and other patterns of dizziness. Considering a complementary technique should not take precedence over the investigation required for the episode. Ask what diagnosis has been established and which parts of the plan address the cause rather than only the sensation of discomfort.

Some combinations require emergency assessment. Vertigo with new trouble speaking, double vision or weakness in an arm or leg should not be managed as a routine acupuncture appointment. Seek emergency help immediately and do not drive. Recurrent or persistent episodes also need assessment even without these features. While dizzy, avoid driving, ladders and tasks that would become dangerous if balance were lost. Practical safety is part of the initial response, before decisions about optional complementary care or a longer-term appointment schedule.

Interpreting acupuncture research

The pilot study by Chiu and colleagues involved a small group after emergency and central neurological conditions had been excluded. It was not randomised, and participants chose their group. These features limit what can be transferred to everyday practice. A short-term change in one measurement does not establish lasting treatment of every cause of dizziness or justify omitting the initial medical examination. The study is relevant as preliminary research, with its limitations kept alongside its reported findings rather than separated from them.

The 2023 Cochrane review specifically addresses persistent postural-perceptual dizziness, or PPPD. It found very little suitable evidence and does not establish general effectiveness of acupuncture for all vertigo. Its inclusion in a reference list is meaningful only when the actual research question is considered. If complementary care is discussed, agree on the symptom being monitored, the observation period and the point at which usefulness will be reconsidered with the treating clinician. An individual report of feeling better is worth recording without treating it as proof of a universal mechanism.

Cost and prices after assessment

For information at Satory, clarify the initial assessment, the proposed service, the price per session and the arrangements for review. Cost cannot identify the cause of dizziness or replace necessary investigation. Ask what happens if referral or a change of plan is required, so that continuation is not assumed. The overview of medical acupuncture methods provides general information. Personal decisions depend on the diagnosis and current clinical picture, with a clear distinction between routine appointments and symptoms requiring earlier medical attention.

Why describe how long a vertigo episode lasts?

Duration helps describe the experience alongside its onset, associated movements and other symptoms. It does not enable self-diagnosis from the article.

Is a spinning sensation the same as every kind of dizziness?

No. The sensation, its duration and associated symptoms matter. Assessment of the cause comes before considering any complementary method.
