For Whom Is Hypnotherapy Contraindicated?

We need to know for whom clinical hypnotherapy or guided parasympathetic predominance is contraindicated.

Hypnosis is described as a procedure involving focused attention and responsiveness to suggestions. Relaxation may be part of the experience, but is not identical to sleep or proof of healing of mind, body or emotions. Suitability requires individual assessment, and a description of parasympathetic tone is not itself a therapeutic indication.

  • their emotional content changes, while
  • at the same time they can improve dysfunctional behaviours related to anxiety, stress, and even pain.

Personal goals may be discussed within collaboration, without a universal promise of problem resolution or absolute safety. History assessment, appropriate training and monitoring of possible difficulties remain necessary.

Situations requiring specialist assessment before a decision

  • Psychosis: the NHS advises against using hypnotherapy because it could worsen the condition. Appropriate care should be coordinated with the treating clinician.
  • Bipolar disorder or a recent major mood change: assess the current clinical situation.
  • Complex psychiatric care or medication: do not stop treatment; coordination is required.
  • Epilepsy or another neurological history: obtain appropriate medical advice.
  • Substance use or acute intoxication: assess safety and capacity for informed consent.

For these particular conditions, you should consult the appropriate psychotherapists.

Hypnotherapy: suitability and history

Suitability is not determined by a general list alone. Assessment considers the particular situation and existing support.

Clinical hypnosis is described in terms of focused attention, guidance and increased responsiveness to suggestions. Experiences differ between people. Information before a session allows the process, boundaries and specific goal to be explained, with time for questions and consent.

References to brain activity or deep relaxation do not establish that every symptom responds to hypnosis. The research question, population and outcome measures matter. An intervention should be considered within the clinical situation and existing support.

Suitability is assessed before the procedure

Wanting to relax is not enough to determine suitability for hypnotherapy. The goal, history, current mental state and existing care need consideration. A general list of diagnoses cannot replace this discussion. The same diagnosis can involve different severity, course and needs. Safe selection does not follow simply because a procedure is psychological or does not use medication. Assessment should explain how the proposal fits the individual rather than assume everyone who requests the service should receive an identical intervention.

Mention previous episodes of severe distress, hospital care, dissociative experiences, neurological conditions and substance use. The information supports assessment and coordination rather than labelling. Taking psychiatric medication does not itself prove exclusion from every psychological intervention. Medication should not be stopped to become eligible, and relevant history should not be concealed. Existing care can help the practitioner understand what support is appropriate and whether another professional’s input is needed before a decision is made.

Psychosis and other concerns need particular care

The NHS advises against using hypnotherapy in people with psychosis because it could worsen the condition. The Royal College of Psychiatrists also highlights this risk. An informational article cannot make the individual decision. Coordination with the treating clinician is needed to arrange appropriate care; this should not be interpreted as permission to proceed with hypnosis despite that recommendation. Caution does not mean abandoning care; it means selecting appropriate help and avoiding uncoordinated interventions. A general promise of relaxation cannot resolve the clinical questions raised by active symptoms or a complex history.

Neurological history, recent mood changes, substance use or complex symptoms may require relevant clinical advice before proceeding. The same technique is not applied automatically to everyone. Postponement may be useful when diagnosis is unclear or current circumstances affect informed consent. Availability of an advertised method does not create an obligation to choose it immediately, especially when stabilisation or another form of support is needed first. Suitability can also change over time and should remain open to review.

Memory, control and consent

Hypnosis is not a reliable method of verifying memories. Someone due to give evidence in a trial should discuss this before application. Suggestions can influence recall, and confidence in an image does not guarantee historical accuracy. Responsible information does not promise recovery of hidden truths or treat every image as proof. Practitioner training and careful questioning matter, particularly with sensitive experiences. A procedure intended to support wellbeing should not be used to establish facts about the past without recognising these limitations.

Consent includes understanding the goal and being able to decline or stop. A person does not surrender control or have to accept unwanted suggestions. Distress should be discussed and assessed rather than treated as a necessary part of the process. The session is not a test of cooperation or belief. Suitability is reviewed during care, especially when new symptoms appear or the approach proves unhelpful. Clear boundaries allow questions without requiring someone to defend their willingness to participate.

Ask about qualifications and cost

Ask about professional role, training, supervision and coordination with other clinicians. Clarify what initial assessment includes and its fee, even if no session is ultimately recommended. No universal price guarantees problem resolution. Referral or another intervention is appropriate when hypnosis is unsuitable. A written question list can help when several professionals are involved. Understanding who manages each issue supports informed choice, rather than assuming one technique will take responsibility for every aspect of health.

Can I determine my own suitability from the article?

The article helps organise questions. A decision about application requires discussion of history, goals and existing care.

What should be clarified before a hypnosis session?

Clarify the goal, session format, medical history and relationship to other care. Descriptions of relaxation or focused attention do not by themselves establish suitability.
